Jharkhand has a number of waterfalls which are widely famous for their mesmerizing scenic beauty. Ranchi, its state capital is also known as “City of Waterfalls”. Waterfalls in Jharkhand are most popular natural attractions in eastern India. Waterfalls attract tourists who come to the site to enjoy the natural beauty of varied rocks, green forests and scenic hills all around. However, some of these waterfalls generate current and fall from a great height. So, the tourists are advised not to venture too near to have bath. Also, some of these sites (such as Sita falls) are too secluded and are situated in areas under maoist control. Some of the most visited and magnificent waterfalls in Jharkhand are:

Waterfalls in JharkhandDassam Falls: It is about 40 kms. from Ranchi on NH33(Ranchi-Jamshedpur Highway). This waterfall is near village Taimara and is a tourist destination. Dassam falls is known as 'Dassam Gagh' (meaning ten) owing to ten rivulets which fall gracefully with sound of gushing water reverberating near the site. In local Mundari language, Dassam means 'falls'. Dassam falls is a treat to the eyes. The Kanchi river falls from an altitude of 144ft. forming the Dassam falls. The water is extremely clean and clear.

Hundru Falls: Subernarekha (also known as Swarnarekha) river falls from a height of 98 mts(322ft.) and creates Hundru falls. Rocks of varied shapes and sizes formed due to erosion has added to the beauty of the place, as also the green cover of trees all over. This makes it an exciting picnic spot.The pool at the base of the waterfall satiates the anxiety of the tourists who cannot wait to have a bath and refresh themselves. It is also a trekking destination for many during summers. Hundru falls is situated 45 kms. from Ranchi off the Ranchi-Purulia Road.

Natural attractions in JharkhandHirni Falls: It is formed when Ramgarha river falls from a height of 121 ft. It is located 70 kms. from Ranchi. The limestone caves (or 'kohs') in the nearby jungles are home to wild animals like porcupine, deer, bear and tigers. The name 'hirni' comes due to large number of deer in this area. A restaurant and lodge are under construction in this location.

Sita Falls: It is adjacent to Johna falls. Hirni and Sita falls are situated amidst jungles. One has to go down Purulia road around 20 kms. beyond Angara and then take a right turn into the road leading to Johna after travelling another 4 kms. The road leading to Johna falls and Sita falls is wide and well constructed. The area around Sita falls is deserted and does not appear safe due to thick jungles.

Picnic spots in JharkhandPanchgarh Falls: It is on Ranchi-Chakradharpur road, 6 kms. from Khunti and 55 kms. from Ranchi.It consists of five streams that are formed in a row. This happens as a result of breaking up of Banai river which falls from a good height.The pristine surroundings and picturesque locale attracts a large number of tourists to this place. Here, the water falls from a considerable height and so it is safe for the visitors. The Government has plans for providing more amenities for the tourists such as restaurants, toilets, fast food joints etc. Pavilions, stair cases and ladders have been provided to offer a grand view of the water fall.

Rajrappa Falls: It is situated around 78 kms. from Ranchi on the way to Bokaro. River Bhairvi(Bhera)joins river Damodar and falls from a height of 30 ft. Chinnamastika( or Chinnamasta temple too is nearby which makes this place a pilgrimage centre too. There are spell - bounding rock formations for visitors to see and boating facilities for them to make their trip an enjoyable one.The Chinnamastika temple is very popular because of its architecture. There are 10 temples of various Gods and Goddesses. Animal sacrifice is still practised in this temple on Tuesday, Saturday and on Kali Puja. There is a headless idol of goddess Chinnamasta which stands on the body of Kamdeo and Rati in the lotus bed. Some Santhal tribes and many others come here ( around December) as 'yatri'(in groups)to immerse ashes of their near and dear ones in Damodar river. Rajrappa is also one of the biggest coal fields in this region.
Waterbodies in Jharkhand
Lodh Falls: 61 kms. from Netarhat, the water of Burha river falls from a height of 468 ft. forming Lodhfalls. It is also known as Burha Ghagh. The sound of roaring water can be heard from afar. A 40 kms. drive from Netarhat to Mahuadaur and then covering another 19 kms. diversion from here to Shastri Chowk and to Pandridippa reaches you to the exquisite site of Lodh falls.

Johna Falls: It is also known as ''Gautam Dhara'' falls. The Ganga river hangs over its master stream, Raru river and Johna falls is formed. The water falls from a height of 141 ft. It gets its name after the nearby village called Johna. One has to travel 40 kms. from Ranchi on Ranchi-Purulia road to have a glimpse of this scintillating waterfall. The place has a rest house and a Buddhist shrine with added enjoyment of having attended a fair organised every Tuesday and Saturday. A temple and ashram dedicated to Buddha was built on the top of Gautam Pahar by the sons of Raja Baldevdas Birla. The Johna Station is around 1.5 kms. from the site.

Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary

Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary situated around the Dalma Hills in state of Jharkhand. It is located about 10 km from Jamshedpur city. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary was inaugurated by Sanjay Gandhi in 1975. The Sanctuary is spread around in 195 km2 and covers area starting from Chandil to 40 km east. This wildlife sanctuary is dwelling region of elephants, sloth bear, barking deer, and porcupines which are the main inhabitants of this place. Small hideouts have been constructed within the sanctuary to catch a colder view of the wild animals in their natural habitat. It also serves as an ideal spot for trekkers.

Betla National Park

It is about 8 km far from Barwadih. In 1974, Betla National Park was declared a Project Tiger Reserve. This park is spread over an area of approx. 250 sq km (97 sq mi). "Betla" name of this park is an acronym of the words, Bison, Elephant, Tiger, Leopard and Axis-Axis (Cheetal). Diversity of various eco-systems is visible in this park comprising a variety of wild animals.

Betla National Park is home to tigers, bisons (locally famous as gaurs), elephants, wild bear, sambhars, spotted deer(chitals), rabbits, pythons (up to 6.1 metres (20 ft) long), and foxes. langurs, rhesus monkeys, blue bulls (neelgai) and wild boars are also seen in this park with some other species like porcupines, antelopes, honey badgers, Malabar giant squirrels, hares, wild cats, wolves, and mongooses etc. For wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, exciting elephant rides are available in this park. Along with jeeps are also available with guides and spotlight for wandering inside the park. Apart from that, watch towers and ground hides are also present in park to facilitate tourists and visitors in viewing the captivating wildlife in the area.

Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary

Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary is located at distance of 135 kilometres (84 mi) from Ranchi, Jharkhand. This wildlife sanctuary was established in 1955. It is widely famous for its scenic beauty and exotic wildlife. Beautifully nestling in low hilly terrain, this sanctuary is situated at an average elevation of 615 metres (2,018 ft) above sea level. It has been spread across an area of 184 km2 (71 sq mi). Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary is home to tigers, sambar, leopards, panthers, wild bears, chital or cheetal, sloth bears, black bears, nilgai, peafowl, hyenas and pigeons. This wildlife sanctuary is also one of the most visited tourist places and wildlife sanctuaries in Jharkhand.

Palamau Tiger Reserve

The Palamau Tiger Reserve is another popular national park in Jharkhand state. It is one of the nine original tiger reserves in India. It also boasts of being the alone tiger reserve in entire state of Jharkhand, India. Initially, in 1947, under the Indian Forests Act, particular area in Palamu district of Jharkhand was set aside as a protected area. In 1974, that area the area was set up as the Palamau Tiger Reserve. However, prior to the formation of this tiger reserve in Jharkhand, this area was mainly used for cattle grazing and camping by locals. The Palamau tiger reserve has a total land area of 1,014 square kilometres (392 sq mi) covering a core area of 414 sq km and a buffer area of 600 sq km. Core area comprises Ramandag, Latoo and Kujurum forest villages of the region. Palamau Tiger Reserve has a variety of flora and fauna found in Jharkhand. Mainly, a tiger reserve, it house hundreds of species of flora and fauna, including several wild animals such as tiger, elephant, leopard, gaur, sambar and wild dogs etc. More than 140 species of birds can be seen in this reserve and peafowl is most popular of all. Palamau Tiger Reserve offers an astounding experience of wildlife attraction to its visitors.

Birsa Munda Zoological Park

There are a variety of useful trees like sal, neem, bel etc. in these forests. Birsa Munda Jaivik Udyan is on National Highway(NH 33), 16 kms. from Ranchi. It is located on Patna-Ranchi road and is near village Chakla, Block Ormanjhi.The unique adoption program started here allows you to adopt an animal from this park. Such programmes actually inculcate love and care for animals and at the same time help to inculcate interest and awareness about environment and conservation of nature.The National Highway divides the whole area into two segments : one section is the Botanical garden which is comparatively smaller than the zoological section. Birds such as coloured and white peafowls, hill mynah, owls, ducks, geese, koel, mute swan, love birds, white ibis etc. are found here. Mammals found here include himalayan black bear, sloth bear, tiger, lion, elephant, barking deer etc. Reptiles like snakes, crocodile, monitor lizard, gharial are found too. Schools come here on educational tours. The excitement is doubled as boating facility is also there.

Muta Crocodile Breeding Centre

Situated 23 kms. from Ranchi, this is a place where around 40 crocodiles are conserved efficiently. It is in Muta, which comes under Ormanjhi Block of Ranchi district. Located on Ormanjhi-Ramgarh road, it has a rest house too for the convenience of visitors. Muta Crocodile Breeding Centre was started in 1987 under International Union for Conservation of Nature Program(IUCN).

Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park

Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park is the largest zoological garden situated in Bokaro Steel City of Jharkhand. This biological park was built in 1989. It has been spread over 80 hectares (200 acres) of land. It is abode to several species of animals and birds which have been brought here from various parts of the world. There is an artificial water park also present within zoo and boating facilities are also available. Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park has also achieved success in breeding of white tigers, Royal Bengal Tigers and Asiatic lions. This park is also counted among most visited zoological parks of the state.

Birsa Deer Park (Bhagwan Birsa Mrig Vihar)

It is located on Ranchi-Khunti National Highway near Block Ormanjhi, around 11 kms. from Ranchi.Not only deer, but various other varieties of mammals are also found here. However, the number of deer runs into hundreds, hence the name. These deer can be seen from close quarters --- thanks to Park Safari rides. There are lions, tigers, monkeys and various other animals here.The children's park adds to fun and frolic for the young visitors here. The park is spread over 23 hectares. Canteen services cater to the needs of the visitors.Important trees like sal, neem, bel, ber are found here. Around 250 deer live and enjoy the natural green surroundings here.The two main varieties of deer here are Sambhar and Chital.November to February is the ideal time to visit this park. Airport is quite near,so is Hatia Railway station. This is perhaps the reason why the number of visitors to this place is increasing day by day.

Konar Dam is another most popular dam situated in state of Jharkhand. It is the second dam of all the four multi-purpose dams included in the first phase of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). Konar Dam was constructed across the Konar River, a tributary of the Damodar River in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand and opened in 1955. Konar Dam is 4,535 m (14,879 ft) long and 48.77 m (160.0 ft) high. This reservoir covers an area of 27.92 km2. Due to picturesque location and scenic beauty, it has been developed as a recreational spot. At present, it is popular recreational spot in Hazaribagh presenting serene natural beauty. Konar Dam is located 41 kms south-east of Hazaribagh and is easily accessible.

Maithon Dam

Getalsud Dam was constructed across the Subarnarekha River with main purpose to fulfill the drinking water requirements of the residents of Ranchi. It was opened in 1971 for public. It is also used for generating electricity and various industrial purposes as well. Getalsud Dam is about 35 km from Ranchi and approx. 30 km from Ramgarh. Tilaiya Dam

This dam was constructed across the Barakar River at Tilaiya in Koderma district of Jharkhand. Tilaiya Dam was inaugurated on 21 February, 1953. It has a power generation capacity of 2 x 2 MW. The dam has a catchment area of 984 sq km (380 sq mi) comprising mainly forests, cultivated lands, pastures, and waste lands. The annual rainfall in the area is 127 cm (50 in). On 26 January 1955, Indian Postal Service issued a set of four stamps for the Five-Year Plan series including one stamp of 1 anna value depicting Tilaiya Dam. The main (Patna-Ranchi) road from Barhi on GT road passing through hills overlooking the reservoir is surely spectacular.

Massanjore Dam

Massanjore Dam is a colossal dam constructed across Mayurakshi River. Massanjore Dam was built in 1955 with assistance from Government of Canada. Palamau Fort is located on the shores of a tributary of the North Koel River in Jharkhand state of India. This fort was constructed by Raja Medini, famous ruler of pre-Mughal era. Ranchi Science Centre

Ranchi Science Centre is the first science centre located in the state of Jharkhand. This science centre functions under Jharkhand Council of Science & Technology (JCST) of Department of Science & Technology, Government of Jharkhand. Best Time to Visit Jharkhand

Best time to visit Jharkhand is during period of October to February when weather remains relatively cool and pleasant. The state has tropical climate and experiences three seasons namely winter, summer and monsoon. Winter starts from October and lasts till February and summer starting from March remains till mid-June with May as the hottest month when temperature reaches up to 37°C. However, temperature may soar up to 42°C during summer season in Ranchi city of the state. Summer season is followed by monsoon or rainy season during July to September months when this state receives maximum rainfall. Annual rainfall of Jharkhand is 1326 mm.
