The Garhwa district came into existence in the year 1991, when it was separated from the Palamau district. The district is situated on Southwest corner of Palamau division.
The district is surrounded by river Sone in the north; Palamau district and area of Chhatisgarh in the south; Palamau district in the east and Sarguja district of Chhatisgarh and Sonebhadra district of U.P. in the west.

The important rivers flowing through the district are Koyal Sone. Danro, Sarsatiya, Tahale, Annaraj, Urea, Bai Banki, Bellaiti, Pando, Biraha, Sapahi, Kanhar.

How to Reach
Garhwa is well connected with roads and railway.
Rail :
For rail communication there is a branch line from Garhwa Road to Mirzapur, which passes through the Garhwa town and Sub-divisional town Nagar-Untari. There is no landing ground for airways in the district.
Road :
Daily bus services are available from Ranchi and major districts of Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhatisgarh. Road communication of this district is not at par with the other district of the state. There is no National Highways in this district. There are 210 Km of State Highway and 96.95 Km of district roads. Link road and corridors are altogether of 190 Km.
