Rachi district of Jharkhand

Earlier the name of the district was Lohardaga. The old district had come into existence after the creation of the non-regulation South – West frontier as a result of the Kol rising in 1831-32. The name of the district was changed in 1899 from Lohardaga to Ranchi after the name of a small village now comprised within the headquarters station.

Ranchi district is one of the twenty-two districts of Jharkhand state, India, and Ranchi is the district headquarters and also the capital of the Jharkhand state.

Subarnarekha River flows by the side of the city.

By Road

Ranchi has been good in Road connectivity with 3-4 National Highways crossing through or close to it. Recently the state government with the support of NHDC has constituted a plan to strengthen the road connectivity of different district headquarters to this capital city with 4-laned highways of international standards. Ranchi has very good road connectivity with places like Jamshedpur (Tatanagar), Bokaro, Dhanbad, Daltonganj, Patna, Gaya and various other Bihar towns. It also has inter-state connectivities to places like Kolkata, Durgapur/Asansol, Siliguri (Darjeeling), Cuttack, Rourkela, Bhubaneswar.

By Air

The Ranchi is located in Hinoo. It is approximately 7 km from the city centre. The airport name is Bhagwan Birsa Munda Airport. An airport is there in Jamshedpur where commercial flights to Ranchi and Calcutta will start soon. The airport is situated in Sonari.
